Use at High Ambient
Temperatures and
with Glowing Objects

Due to their robust design, sensors for hot ambient temperatures are ideal for use in demanding industrial plants, such as the automotive, glass and steel industries. In addition to being suitable for use in high temperature ranges, the sensors are also designed for measurements on red glowing surfaces. Variants with blue laser enable reliable results on glowing objects.

Challenges with High Ambient Temperatures and Hot Materials

High Emissivity

Challenge: Glowing objects have a high emissivity, meaning that they emit a lot of heat radiation. Due to the intense heat radiation and high temperatures, they can influence the measured values of the sensors.

Solution:

Mirrorings and Reflections from Hot Media

Challenge: Hot liquid media present a challenge due to their moving, non-solid surface and the frequent reflections that occur. Reflective liquids in particular reflect light or laser beams irregularly, which can lead to multiple distance signals.

Solution:
Time-of-flight laser distance sensors enable reliable measurement of hot and liquid media. The sensors are able to detect several objects in the measuring range and to suppress the disturbing reflections. This makes it possible to separate the relevant signal of the liquid medium from the signal of a disturbing background. In this way, the measurement signal remains stable even under challenging conditions, such as with reflective liquids.

Extreme Ambient Conditions

Challenge: Extreme ambient conditions can directly influence the measured values of the sensors, as temperature fluctuations contract and expand the housing material. This changes the optical components, which influences the measured values.

Solution:

Ambient Temperature up to 250 °C

Challenge: In extremely hot environments of up to 250 °C, conventional sensors may melt or be damaged by the high temperatures.

Solution:
  • The sensors for the high temperature range are distinguished by their robust and particularly heat-resistant housing design.

  • Temperature-resistant glass fiber-optic cables are suitable for confined spaces. Signal evaluation takes place externally via the fiber-optic amplifier outside the high temperature range.

The Advantages of Blue Laser on Red Glowing Surfaces

General Information on the Light Spectrum

The light spectrum consists of different wavelengths. Each has a different color. A color can be assigned to each wave in the color spectrum. Red light differs from blue light in its wavelength and energy density.

  • Blue light has a wavelength of 380 to 500 nm and is characterized by a high energy density.

  • Red light, on the other hand, has a wavelength of 640 to 690 nm and a lower energy density than blue light.

Signal from Red and Blue Laser on Glowing Surface

Blue laser light offers the advantage of delivering reliable and precise measurement results on red glowing surfaces. This is because a sensor with blue laser light only allows blue wavelengths through its bandpass filter, while other spectral ranges are blocked. This filters out the red and infrared light emitted mainly by glowing objects. Only the blue laser light from the sensor reaches the optics and generates a stable signal on the line.

In contrast, the bandpass filter of a sensor with red laser naturally lets red light through to capture the sensor’s own laser light. However, since red and infrared light are spectrally close together and the bandpass filter always allows a small wavelength range, infrared light can also pass through the bandpass filter. Since glowing objects mainly emit red and infrared radiation, these disturbing wavelengths also reach the line. This leads to a significant reduction in the sensor signal. As the blue laser blocks the interfering waves, a more stable and accurate measurement is possible.

Industries with High Temperatures and Glowing Objects

Fill-Level Measurement with Liquid Aluminum

Challenge:
Casting aluminum bars is a central process in the casting industry. The fill level of the liquid aluminum, which reaches a temperature of 700 °C, must be monitored. However, the extreme heat creates a reflective surface that can strongly reflect light rays and influence the measurement.

Solution:

Coarse Wire Measurement in Steel Mills

Challenge:
During the production of coarse wire in steelworks, billets up to 1,200 °C must be rolled and then checked for geometric quality characteristics such as diameter, ovality, rolling or surface defects.

Solution:

Positioning Hot Slabs

Challenge:
During initial rolling operations, slabs must be correctly positioned for quality control to ensure that slabs are processed evenly. Due to the extremely high temperatures of the slabs, it is necessary to measure from a long distance.

Solution:

Thickness Measurement with Annealed Metal

Challenge:
Thickness measurement of annealed metal plays a crucial role in industrial processes such as metal or steel production. The extremely high temperatures present a challenge as they could damage conventional sensors due to the heat or affect their accuracy. Due to the glowing surface, red laser light penetrates deep into the surface and can make measurements unreliable.
