The competition is entirely voluntary and exclusively privately funded. The winners and finalists are selected by twelve regional juries and a final jury, who work according to a corporate governance code and certified quality management. Participating companies can achieve three award levels in the competition: The “Nomination list” contains all companies that were nominated for the competition in accordance with the tender in the current competition year. The second stage comprises the “Jury list” and includes the companies that largely meet the five selection criteria. The “Award list”, i.e. the third stage, lists the few companies nominated as finalists or prize winners. The five competition criteria include outstanding performance in the overall company development, in the creation and securing of jobs and training, in modernization and innovation, in work in the region, as well as in service, proximity to the customer and marketing. Three winners and five finalists received awards in each of the twelve competition regions throughout Germany.
