In the food industry, crates are dried in spin dryers after cleaning. In order for the water to drain completely out of the crates, they must be oriented with the bottom facing upwards. The ultrasonic distance sensor mounted above the conveyor line detects the passing boxes regardless of their color, shape or mesh size. If the sensor detects a box that is on the conveyor with the bottom facing downwards, it is rejected in the next step.

In the food industry, baked goods are transported in boxes through the various process steps. Before cleaning the boxes, it has to be ensured that there is no product left in the boxes. If baked goods are in a box, it is automatically ejected. The robust sensors in metric stainless steel housing with IP67 degree of protection reliably detect objects regardless of shape and color.

FFP3 masks must be monitored during the manufacturing process to ensure reliable function. During this process, it must be checked whether the integrated membranes are correctly inserted before the sealing caps are applied. The membrane must not protrude and must be flush with the frame. For this purpose, a vision system is installed which checks both the position and the diameter of the membrane. The system consists of a machine vision camera, an analysis module (control unit) and a ring light. If the tolerance is exceeded, the mask is rejected.

When filling different types of spreadable cheese, it must be ensured that the correct lid and logo are applied to each packaging. As the varieties are changed several times a day, there must be no confusion between the lid and the contents. Hundreds of tests can be performed automatically every minute – regardless of their position on the conveyor belt.

Before PCBs are loaded in SMD systems, they must be placed in the correct position and fed into the system. For the position test, a vision system is installed above the PCBs, which records a crosshair printed on the circuit board as a reference point. From this, the so-called “offset” is determined and transferred to the machine control. In the subsequent assembly process, all components are applied in the correct position – thereby minimizing misplacement. The PCB is also uniquely identified by the vision system via decoding of a DataMatrix code.

Heavy goods and fluctuating temperatures can affect the dimensional accuracy of metal structures in high-bay warehouses. In order for the rack feeders (RF) to be able to store and unload containers precisely over the alleys, which are up to 40 m high, precise rack positioning is necessary. For this purpose, a vision sensor with external lighting is mounted on the rack feeder on each side, which enables precise positioning via hole detection on the metal struts in the X/Y direction. The vision sensor detects holes of different sizes in single and double depth using a pattern matching software module.

Once beverage cans have been filled, labels are applied on the cans. The cans must be aligned in order to position the labels with millimeter precision. For this purpose, they are separated at high speed over a conveyor belt and turned in a jaw clamping system. A side-mounted vision system consisting of a machine vision camera, lens, ring light and analysis module records several images of the can per second and thus identifies features such as 1D codes or printed patterns. If these are detected and thus the position of the can is detected, the label application is triggered.

While the cobot scans the parts to be inspected, the spot lights provide precise illumination of the elements so that the camera can reliably detect each mounting element.

The spot light is ideal for applications with limited space due to its small format.

1D Code
A 1D code, also known as barcode or one-dimensional code, is a code whose optical aquisition is made in an unidimensional way.

2D Code
A 2D code, also known as a two-dimensional code, consists of a pattern of dark and light elements (bars, rectangles and squares with corresponding spaces in between) which are arranged in a 2D fashion. 2D codes have a more complex layout than 1D codes, and the technology required for acquiring and deciphering them is more complex as well as the scanner must always read the entire pattern depicted by the barcode in order to acquire and decipher 2D codes, and not just a horizontal line as is the case with 1D Codes. Two-dimensional codes contain more diverse information than one-dimensional codes, for example information for the identification of products, texts such as addresses, and delivery note numbers. In general, we differentiate within the 2D codes between the stacked codes (stacked code) and the matrix codes (DataMatrix code).

2D Code Scanner
A 2D code scanner is a scanner which operates according to the principle of an image processing system. It is equipped with a CCD or a CMOS element plus an integrated illumination and scans (scanning) a defined surface area depending on the selected scanning range. Thus, it is capable of reading 1D and 2D codes omnidirectionally.

3-A SSI
3-A SSI is an organization which sets standards in the field of food and beverages in close cooperation with the FDA. It is comparable with the EHEDG in Europe. Components in closed processes (e. g. piping) can be certified by 3-A SSI. Certified components bear the 3-A logo. Components in open processes (e. g. conveyor belts) cannot be certified.

3-Stage Enabling Switch
3-stage enabling switches (enabling switch), in comparison to 2-stage enabling switches, have the advantage of always ensuring safe shutdown in emergency situations regardless of individual user operation (release or pressing – in the event of a cramp). Mode of operation of a 3-stage enabling switch:

3D Tracking
3D tracking is the sum of rotary tracking or translatory tracking plus auto-focus. Objects are tracked with regard to the X and Y positions and are reliably detected by auto-focus at various working distances.

6-Band Multispectral Sensor
In a 6-bank multispectral sensor, the spectrum of visible light is broken down into six ranges including red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet (ROYGBV color space). This makes it possible to detect extremely fine color nuances thanks to spectral measurement.

Absolute Pressure
Absolute pressure is pressure relative to zero pressure in an empty space (vacuum). Example: Atmospheric pressure (ambient pressure / air pressure) has an absolute value of approximately 1 bar and a relative value of 0 bar.

Absorption is a process in which the radiant energy of a light beam passing through a medium is partly or fully converted into another form of energy, e.g. heat.
