In the metalworking industry, steel coils are unwound and processed continuously. To ensure a continuous material and process flow, an ultrasonic distance sensor is mounted above the rollers. This reliably measures the distance between the sensor and the material and thus determines the coil size and the remaining quantity on the roll. Adverse ambient conditions such as dust or oil mist, ambient light and dark or shiny surfaces do not affect the measurement data accuracy.

To verify the authenticity of products, logos, specific features or QR codes are often printed directly onto the product or packaging with fluorescent ink. In the electronics industry, PCBs must be detected on transport modules at several stations in order to ensure safe transport. The fiber-optic cables are operated using the multiplex method on a multi unit located outside the conveyor line. This communicates with the control system via the master. With the help of two checkpoints, they ensure that a component is in the feed and that it is correctly aligned. Their compact format makes them ideal for tight installation situations and in areas where only very little space is available for querying.

Their large working range and robust housing make them ideal for use in difficult conditions such as high dust levels, large temperature differences or changing material types.

The ultrasonic sensor reliably detects every car regardless of color, paint quality or shape.

Leftovers are created during the production of potato chips. These rejects are transported to a waste container along a feed screw. There are four flaps to ensure that the container is filled evenly. Ultrasonic distance sensors with analog output are installed next to the flaps and are used to check the fill level of the container. When the mound of rejected potato chip reaches the maximum height, the sensor switches and the flap is closed. The next flap then opens. Dust and damp surfaces have no impact on the switching behavior of the sensors in the M30 housing.

Colorful, glossy or transparent films are used in packaging plants to ensure that products are airtight and securely packed. These are conveyed by rolls and attached around the objects. Ultrasonic distance sensors monitor the roll diameter to ensure continuous material flow. Two independent switching outputs signal when there is little film left on the roll and when the roll is empty and needs to be replaced. In addition, the sensor checks whether the film is open or torn.

Different colored cartons in packaging systems are stacked on top of each other in magazines before being unfolded and filled in downstream processes. In order to ensure a continuous material supply, the stacking height of the magazine is checked by an ultrasonic distance sensor. This sensor records the measured values either continuously via IO-Link or with two switching points so that the magazine can be refilled in good time. Thanks to the wide sonic cone, recesses, gaps or punches have no influence on object sensing.

In the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, ingredients of ointments or creams are mixed together in fully automated mixers. In order to perform the mixing process correctly and to achieve the correct consistency, the minimum and maximum fill levels must be continuously monitored. For this purpose, an ultrasonic distance sensor is installed above the mixer, which reliably detects the material regardless of color, condition or transparency. The fill level can be checked either via an analog measured value or by defining individual switching thresholds via IO-Link.

In the furniture industry, wooden panels with different colors, shapes, degrees of gloss and surfaces are conveyed on roller conveyor belts to the next process step. The slim metric design allows installation beneath the conveyor technology in order to be able to carry out a precise presence check of the wooden panels. Even dust and chips do not influence the results of the ultrasonic sensors.

1D Code
A 1D code, also known as barcode or one-dimensional code, is a code whose optical aquisition is made in an unidimensional way.

A 1D/2D scanner is a scanner that can read and process both 1D codes (1D code) and 2D codes (2D code).

2D Code
A 2D code, also known as a two-dimensional code, consists of a pattern of dark and light elements (bars, rectangles and squares with corresponding spaces in between) which are arranged in a 2D fashion. 2D codes have a more complex layout than 1D codes, and the technology required for acquiring and deciphering them is more complex as well as the scanner must always read the entire pattern depicted by the barcode in order to acquire and decipher 2D codes, and not just a horizontal line as is the case with 1D Codes. Two-dimensional codes contain more diverse information than one-dimensional codes, for example information for the identification of products, texts such as addresses, and delivery note numbers. In general, we differentiate within the 2D codes between the stacked codes (stacked code) and the matrix codes (DataMatrix code).

2D Code Scanner
A 2D code scanner is a scanner which operates according to the principle of an image processing system. It is equipped with a CCD or a CMOS element plus an integrated illumination and scans (scanning) a defined surface area depending on the selected scanning range. Thus, it is capable of reading 1D and 2D codes omnidirectionally.

3-A SSI
3-A SSI is an organization which sets standards in the field of food and beverages in close cooperation with the FDA. It is comparable with the EHEDG in Europe. Components in closed processes (e. g. piping) can be certified by 3-A SSI. Certified components bear the 3-A logo. Components in open processes (e. g. conveyor belts) cannot be certified.

3-Stage Enabling Switch
3-stage enabling switches (enabling switch), in comparison to 2-stage enabling switches, have the advantage of always ensuring safe shutdown in emergency situations regardless of individual user operation (release or pressing – in the event of a cramp). Mode of operation of a 3-stage enabling switch:

3D Tracking
3D tracking is the sum of rotary tracking or translatory tracking plus auto-focus. Objects are tracked with regard to the X and Y positions and are reliably detected by auto-focus at various working distances.

6-Band Multispectral Sensor
In a 6-bank multispectral sensor, the spectrum of visible light is broken down into six ranges including red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet (ROYGBV color space). This makes it possible to detect extremely fine color nuances thanks to spectral measurement.

Absolute Pressure
Absolute pressure is pressure relative to zero pressure in an empty space (vacuum). Example: Atmospheric pressure (ambient pressure / air pressure) has an absolute value of approximately 1 bar and a relative value of 0 bar.

Absorption
Absorption is a process in which the radiant energy of a light beam passing through a medium is partly or fully converted into another form of energy, e.g. heat.
