Modular Ring Lights for Machine Vision

Modular ring lights are circular arrays with several LEDs which are used in combination with machine vision cameras. These industrial ring illumination is suitable for homogeneously illuminating both large and small working distances. With their modular design and a broad range of light colors, they fit and solve numerous applications – manufactured by wenglor.

Illumination Methods Using Modular Ring Lights

Machine Vision ring lights are most commonly used in one of these illumination methods, depending on the working distance (WD).

Low Angle for Short WD

The LMLX low angle light emits light with an angle of incidence at 45°. It can even create an efficient darkfield effect at close working distances.

Brightfield for Medium WD

The LMRX modular ring light without any accessory creates a highly diffuse and very bright light, suited for matte surfaces and fast moving objects.

Brightfield for Large WD

The ZVZF1 ring light emits light with up to 150,000 lux illumination intensity, thus creating a brightfield on large working distances.

Dark Field for Short Working Distances

The LMFX dark field illumination emits diffuse light with an angle of incidence of 60 degrees. Thanks to the particularly flat light guide, surfaces can be displayed with high contrast.

LMLX Low Angle Light

The LMLX low angle light is a combination of the LMRX modular ring light and a ZMRG low angle accessory that allows an angle of incidence at 45°.

This vision ring light is ideal for inspecting features on shiny parts and highlighting edges, indents, protrusions and scratches. Applications for this product includes the inspection of dot-peen marked and several types of DPM codes.

Illuminated Features

Improper illumination – the dot-peen marked code cannot be read.
Illuminated with LMLX low angle light – the dot-peen marked code can be read properly.

LMFX Dark Field Illumination

The LMFX dark field illumination combines the LMRX ring light with the ZMRG dark field attachment to ensure precise surface inspection at a 60 degree angle of incidence. This configuration is particularly suitable for inspecting glossy and dark surfaces, where edges, bumps and scratches are clearly highlighted.

For example, the LMFX dark field illumination helps with quality control and fault detection in electronics production by increasing the contrast at the edges of the components during PCB inspection, thereby improving their visibility.

LMRX Modular Ring Light

The LMRX series are a range of powerful light rings with a high density of LEDs, providing a wide illumination cone and a lot of diffusion. They cover a large field of view from working distances of 100 mm up to 600 mm. These square ring lights are suitable to illuminate objects with matte surfaces or fast moving objects which require high brightness.

Maximum Modularity

Starting from a diffuse LMRX ring light, the addition of a low angle accessory and dome accessory change the way the light is diffused and directed towards the target.
The LMRX ring light is availabe in two different sizes with different minimum working distances.

The following overviews indicate the brightness values for the different working distances measured in ring configuration with white light in continiuous mode. In strobe overdrive mode, brightness is four times higher for LMRX10x and 3.8 times higher for LMRX20x.
Thanks to its unique round/square shape, the LED sections of the modular ring light are divided into four sectors that can be activated in different ways.

Via the control panel, it is possible to choose between 4-sector lighting and 2-sector lighting, thus turning the ring light into two parallel bar lights. Additionally, each individual sector can be activated via remote control (optional M12 × 1, 8-pin).

Sector lighting is available for all light sources (infrared or white and red or cyan).

M12 Standard Connector with Five Male Pins

As a standard, the LMRX ring lights are connected via M12 connector with five male pins. This connection includes the following functionalites:
  • Power (24 V DC)
  • Selection of different operating modes (continuous or strobe mode)
  • Dimming from 100% to 30% brightness

Optional M12 Connector with Eight Male Pins

For remote control, the LMRX modular ring light can be connected via M12 connector with eight male pins.
This connection method is needed to use the following additional options the LMRX series offers:
  • Individual sector control
  • Color control
  • Enabling the operating mode strobe overdrive
  • Keypad locking
The following overview shows the different levels of homogeneity in relation to the working distance and the field of view respectively.

The flatter the chart, the better the homogeneity.

  • Field of view: 150 × 120 mm
  • Working distance: 200 mm
  • Field of view: 200 × 150 mm
  • Working distance: 300 mm
  • Field of view: 250 × 200 mm

LMRX20x Machine Vision Ring Light

  • Working distance: 80 mm
  • Field of view: 200 × 150 mm

A LMRX ring light can also be used by putting both the light and the camera at a low angle between the target surface and the normal to the surface. This method is useful for reducing glare and highlighting edges, scratches and engraved markings, such as dot peen marked codes on shiny metals.
